SPAM EMAIL, AVOIDING MADE EASY

There’s no way to eliminate spam entirely. The best you can do is to actively prevent and actively block spam from getting to your inbox. Below are some pointers on how to manage and minimize the amount of spam you receive.

1. Keep your email private

  • Do not submit your email address to websites that you're unfamiliar with or have no reason to trust.

  • Do not post your email address where others can see it, such as public websites like forums. Spammers often collect email addresses from websites like these.

2. Read the fine print

  • Often there is a text box that you need to select to opt out of receiving email marketing material from the company in question.

  • When you register with a website, make sure you know what you are agreeing to.

3. Block or report

  • Make sure you're using spam filters to their best.

  • There are various ways to report or block suspect emails. Doing this helps to eliminate future spam. Do this, rather than just deleting the suspect message.

4. Beware of unsubscribe

  • Never confirm an "unsubscribe" request from a newsletter or sender you do not know. This confirms to a spammer that the user/email exists.

  • Never reply to any form of spam. It is another confirmation to the spammers that they have a real, live person at this email address.

5. Use separate email addresses

  • It goes without saying, use a personal email address for personal activities. Many bad results can come from using work email for personal reasons.

  • Keep your main email address private, just for friends and family. It's a good idea to set up a second email address if you regularly sign up for services online. Neither of these should be your work email address.
