An Important Note on Buying Managed IT Services

 

While there may be similarities in the naming convention between IT service providers, there is no standard “part number” for managed IT services pricing and agreements.

It’s important to understand that the EXACT services that each IT company offers will be differentEVEN if the service packages are named the same thing. Some say full-service, but be sure to read the fine print. It may look like all the services you wanted are included, but once they come onboard you find they are not. You will find yourself disappointed when you constantly get billed outside of your contract price. The cheapest quote is not always the cheapest in the end. 

There’s that much variability in managed IT services deliverables and responsibilities, you can expect significant variation in the PRICE of managed IT services. 

So be sure the vendors you’re interviewing are being transparent in what you’re ACTUALLY GETTING with each service.

 

HERE ARE SOME IMPORTANT QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN YOU HAVE THE QUOTE IN HAND:

  1. Does this quote include projects? If it doesn't, get a clear definition of what the IT company considers a "project". The term "projects" varies considerably among IT companies. 

  2. Is there a time limit on the services? For instance, is working on an issue longer than 30 minutes considered a "project" or out of scope? 

  3. What is the hourly rate for support not included in the contract?

  4. What are the response times on critical issues? 

  5. What devices does the quote cover? PC's, Servers, Firewall, additional locations? 

  6. Is this contract for remote and on-site support? Is there a travel fee?

  7. Is installing a new software program purchased on the Server included? Or is that a "project"?

  8. Are there limits on the number of service calls or hours we can use for support each month?

  9. When you buy a "NEW" PC for an employee, does it cover the new PC set-up and transfer of data? Some contracts will not cover anything "NEW". 

  10. Do they guarantee your happiness? Will you be stuck in a long term contract?
